IoPT – Identity-Oriented Therapy

Identity – oriented Psychotherapy (IoPT method) is an experiential psychotherapeutic method . Through the IoPT process, the person looks into a mirror, through resonance in others. It shows who you really are, what motivates you, what holds you back, or what and why you prefer to look the other way, or so many other types of strategies we use daily.

Interactive Self-Resonance is based on modern and recognized theories about trauma and attachment. The method has its roots in the trauma-processing method of psychotherapist Dr. Franz Ruppert (IoPT, Identity Oriented Psychotrauma Theory and Therapy)

Through this method, the person discovers behavior patterns that may have been formed at the beginning of their life, even in the womb or in the early years. Also, of course, later on. The person discovers which kinds of strategies were developed and why they were appropriate «at that moment» for the circumstances they were in, but which now hinder them more than they help them move forward.

During an IoPT process, the person encounters their behaviors, feelings, unexpressed emotions, possible survival strategies, and the reasons for not recognizing a possible trauma. This allows them to understand themselves better, admit repressed feelings, and free themselves from old patterns and beliefs. In this way, to settle more in the present, be more in contact with healthier strategies, to know their true identity in order to lead a fuller life in the here and now.

The goal of a self-encounter through IoPT is for the person to take the reins of themself and of their life. Therefore, their wish, their desire for change, or their research question or intention are always the starting point. The key concepts here are the recognition of the reality we carry within, the recognition of wounds and their impact on one’s external reality, the healing of these wounds, and compassion for oneself and for any others involved.

The model shows the internal splits that arise when impactful events occur. Fragments that lead to emotional disconnection, to depersonalization, to dissociation, among other ways of facing such an event. This model also shows what people can do to recover from it. To integrate fragmented parts and thus come more into contact with the healthiest part that we all carry and have by nature. By doing this, the model-method helps to situate one’s reactions, behaviors, and feelings, to understand oneself and others, and to open up to new possibilities. Understanding oneself, feeling oneself, and above all self-managing oneself for greater autonomy and better self-regulation.

Helping us to be responsible for ourselves in order to live the life we want to live.
